For Midtown Revival, “Fantasticks” Clones Its Village Space

“Fans of ‘The Fantasticks’ entering New York’s new Snapple Theater Center to see the Off-Broadway revival of history’s longest-running musical will notice that some things look very familiar. The show’s new home at Broadway and 50th Street has been configured to reproduce the seat arrangement and some of the ambience of The Sullivan Street Playhouse, the gemlike Greenwich Village theatre where the cast sang ‘Try To Remember’ for nearly 42 years, from 1960 to 2002.”

Dispute Over Book Filming Sparks Debate

The halting of filming of a popular book by Monica Ali in London has provoked a debate about cultural sensitivities and freedom of expression. “In some ways, the debate has revived a much wider discussion in Europe about whether free speech may be limited by the sensitivities of people who feel affronted by it. Should old Western societies, in other words, rewrite their definitions of liberty to accommodate the sensitivities of others?”

Who Reads? (Mostly Women)

“When the federal Department of Canadian Heritage surveyed Canadian reading habits last year, it found a distinct gender gap. Women accounted for 60 per cent of the daily readers and 70 per cent of the heavy readers who had read 50 or more books in the last 12 months. Women also outnumbered men two to one as regular readers of both classic and contemporary novels.”

Chihuly Lawsuit Not Settled After All

A lawsuit brought by glass artist Dale Chihuly against a former employee has not been settled, contrary to what the artist claimed last week. “On Friday, Chihuly’s studio manager Billy O’Neill and publicist Janet Makela said that they initially thought the suit was settled, but discovered they were ‘misinformed’ by their attorney about the resolution of Chihuly’s suit against glass blower Rubino.”
