Columbus, Ohio Is Seeing A Mini-Boom In Small Dance Companies

“Movement Afoot is just one of several startup dance ensembles to emerge in the past five years in central Ohio. The groups – also including Oyo Dance Company (contemporary), New Vision Dance Co. (jazz), and Columbus Modern Dance Company and Columbus Moving Company (modern) – represent a variety of styles. Most have fewer than 10 dancers. Given the popularity of Columbus’ primary companies – BalletMet and Columbus Dance Theatre – the proliferation of ensembles raises an obvious question: Will the community support so many groups?”

The Enemy Within At MoMA: Dust

“Over two years, [Nina] Katchadourian interviewed staff members across every department, ultimately realizing that they were united by their stance against this pervasive, invisible-until-it’s-not element.” Then she created a new audio guide: “Wall texts encourage visitors to listen in at a dozen locations throughout the museum, including a tough-to-Swiffer ledge overhanging four stories of the museum’s atrium.”

Artist Tino Sehgal Returns To His Ballet Roots – Sort Of

“In his early years, Sehgal” – now famous for his “constructed situations” – performed for the French choreographer Jérôme Bel, working also with Les Ballets C de la B, a highly conceptual contemporary dance company in Ghent.” Earlier this fall, he created new works for a very un-Sehgalian setting: the Paris Opera Ballet at the stupefyingly lavish Palais Garnier.

Australia’s Opera Companies Should Get Extra $24M In Funding (And One Of Them Gets An Ultimatum): Government Report

“Australia’s four major opera companies should receive more than $24m in extra federal funding over four years, according to recommendations from the long-awaited National Opera Review. Along with the proposal for extra funding, the review also recommended that one of the companies, Opera Queensland, be given three years to sort its finances out or lose its status as a Major Performing Arts (MPA) company, which secures it government funding.”

Enough Of Bad Sex In Fiction – It’s Time For A Good Sex In Fiction Award, And Now There Is One

“You may have heard of the Bad Sex in Fiction Award, but isn’t it about time we started rewarding good sex in literature? That’s exactly what Erotic Review [magazine] decided, prompting them to create the Good Sex in Fiction Award. And while the Bad Sex in Fiction long list is certainly worth a few laughs, let’s all be honest: It’s the Good Sex in Fiction long list that you’re going to want to go out and read.”

Philly’s Theatrical Decency Cop (He Was An Actual Policeman)

“For most of two decades, Detective Sgt. Jake Gomborow was usually the cop on the aisle. … ‘Acting under instructions, I attended the performance [of a drama titled King Hunger] … on Saturday evening, December 6th, 1924. The acting in the entire play, aside from the few vulgar and sacrilegious remarks, was weird and gruesome, and in my opinion, the average audience in any theatre would have walked out before the show was over. My reason for not stopping the performance was because it is in its first American appearance.”
